These small 1x2 velcro backed patches came into use when pilots would cut the flap off of their sleeve pencil pocket. The flap which fastened by velcro had a 1x2 tab left over at the bottom of the pocket and was perfect for placing a small patch. Now with the proliferation of velcro on military uniforms, they are more popular than ever.
